UP member suspended for looting sand and stones from protected area in Sylhet
A UP member has been temporarily suspended after allegations of illegally extracting sand and stones from the reserved area of the railway ropeway adjacent to the Bholaganj stone quarry in Companiganj, Sylhet have been proven. The suspended Md. Dulal Mia alias Dula is a member of Ward No. 8 of Islampur West Union in Companiganj Upazila, Sylhet.

On July 14, Deputy Secretary of the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Md. Noor Alam issued a notification. Sylhet’s Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Azizunnahar confirmed on Monday that he had recently received a letter in this regard. The notification mentioned that the complaint against Md. Dulal Mia Dula, a member of Ward No. 8 of Islampur West Union Parishad in Companiganj Upazila, has been proven in the investigation and the Deputy Commissioner has requested to take necessary action. Considering that the criminal activities committed by Dulal Mia are against the public interest including the Union Parishad, Md. Dulal Mia has been temporarily suspended from his ward member post as per Section 34(4)(b) of the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act, 2009, as per Section 34(1) of the same Act. Meanwhile, in another letter signed by the Deputy Secretary, a reply has been sent to the Local Government Department through the Deputy Commissioner within 10 working days of receiving the letter as to why Dulal Mia will not be finally removed. Sylhet Deputy Director of Local Government Suborna Sarkar told Prothom Alo that she received a letter from the ministry yesterday, Sunday, to reply as to why UP member Dulal Mia will not be finally removed. It will be sent to the temporarily expelled UP member. He will have to respond to it within 10 working days of receiving the letter.
UNO of Companiganj Azizunnahar told Prothom Alo that he recently received a letter in this regard. Dulal Mia Dula was accused of looting sand and stones from the reserved area of the railway ropeway. This was proven in the investigation by the district administration.
